Sydney's Blattman Sets 3rd World Record In 12 Months
Saturday January 30, 1999
Fabian Blattman, of Sydney, set a world record at the Summer Down Under international wheelchair track meeting at Homebush Bay last night.
The world record is his third at the Sydney International Athletics Centre track in just 12 months.
Blattman, 40, who is a quadriplegic after a motorcycle accident in his youth, clocked 16 min 46.95sec for the 5000m in sticky and humid conditions.
He easily broke his own world record (16:51.81) which he set on this track 12 months and one day ago during the 1998 meeting - the same night he also broke the 1500m for quads.
``I seem to perform in the heat. I just can't get going in the cold, I stiffen up," Blattman said.
``I didn't think I had it until two laps to go and then I just went for it. I often feel like crap when the gun goes off but I click into gear and the pain goes away."
Last night's track meet was the third event of the Summer Down Under series, which ends tomorrow with a 15km road race in Sydney's Centennial Park.
